Lunch on the orbit

leave a comment »

Following last week’s post about space cookies, I must make a confess – I always wanted to go to space. And I still do. As an astronaut, of course. (Being true for me it is more logical that spaceshuttle are able to take off form the ground than the regular airplanes are able to do so)
Having a chance to see the blue marble Earth, to float in space, to catch flying droplets of orange jucie. Gosh! That would be something. Maybe, someday.
Being a foodie as well I wanted to show You a quite interesting list of Ten Best Space Foods, which I’ve found on the Discovery Channel Space site. Did You know, that tortillas are a basic cosmic bread – becasue they don’t crumble so much.
Moreover, beside regular canned food, sometimes astronauts have occasin to taste some dishes made by celebrity chefs, e.g. Martha Stewart or Rachel Ray. So what do You think about space diet? As for me I would rather wait till they would have a fridge on-board. I just couldn’t imagine 4 months with garlic and onions as my only fresh veggies.

Just a song

Unfortunatelly in Polish. But even from the melody alone You can guess it’s this kind of stupidly simple song that tells about rather serious stuff

Patricia Pancreas and Lucy Lung – quite different dolls, which make You think

leave a comment »

donor dollsDonating organs after death is very important, though controversial issue. For example, despite the fact that I know, that my liver or lung could help someone I am not sure if I would wanted to become a donor, even though I for cremation .
Maybe I will change my and in some time (it would be good, wouldn’t it?). Taking into account my statement above it may (or rather must) sound hypocritical, but I think that the organ donation is an issue worth talking about and educating about. So the people would know what choice they have.

There, I finished. The reason to write that above are really different toys created by David Foox, an artist based in Denver, Colorado. Though most probably he has created his dolls just for fun, I think that accidentally such funny story can make people think about what they can do with their livers, lungs etc. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am honoured to present to you the amazing Donor Dolls.

We have here a doll of Black Market Kidney, Red Blood Cell, Cornea and Smoker’s Lung (yuck!!!!). And 2o other. Cute, though horrible.

About a genious, children books and flying into space

with one comment

Today afternoon the agencies have informed, that Stephen Hawking, famous astrophysicist, cosmologist and mathematician had been rushed to the hospital. In rather laconic announcement form Cambridge University it was only stated that scientist is „very ill“.

The hospitalisation was caused by lung infection with which Hawking has fighting for few weeks now. The state of weakened Hawking became so bad that finally doctors have decided to move him to the clinic to keep Hawking under permanent observation.

Since many years Hawking is living with ASL – a neurodegenerative disorder that cannot be treated. Because of his illness Hawking in nearly totally paralyzed. He can only move one finger and speak using a specially made voice synthesizer.

Hawking is – and I won’t say anything original or unusual here – one of the greatest minds of our times. But besides being a genious physicist and cosmologist, Hawking has made and is still making a great job in popularizing science. Because one thing is to know something. And knowing how to spread someone’s knowledge and make in clear for other is totally different and the hell more though thing to do.

His „Short history of time“ has become a worldwide bestseller, being sold in few millions copies. Similarly other titles like „The Universe in a nutshell“ became amazingly popular among people who really have nothing to do with serious science, especially quantum physics in day-to-day life.

Recently Hawking started to write for children. Together with his daughter Lucy he has already written two books about a boy named George. Besides talking about fantastic adventures of the main protagonist, those books are smuggling a load of quite difficult knowledge to the mind of small kids, who usually hate maths, calculus and all things related. For me – COOL!

Other (and for sake of the length of this post and your patience – last mentioned) thing with which Hawking made me totally for him are his dreams. Doing research and teaching about science this 67-year-old Briton wants to…go to space obviously. Two years ago prof. Hawking has made a first step – he took a zero gravity fight, during which he could feel how it would be like to float in space. Being stuck to the wheel chair since his early years he had to feel truly like on cloud nine. The Hawking’s flight should take place this year.

Sixth sense – another great idea from MediaLab

with one comment

Here’s another great invention form the Media Lab (if I could pick up any place in a world to study in, it would be it!).
This time the Fluid Interfaces group came up with idea of the computer system, which would be as organic and natural in use as it is possible. The result of their works is called Sixth Sense. And in a facet the gizmo works as one. Whole invention is build form off-the -shelf web camera, mini-projector and a smartphone. The cool thing is that the whole invention costs around 350 bucks.
Better then writing about it I will show You, how it works.
