All (wrong) about Ida – great discovery or great misunderstanding?

UPDATE:Thanks to the New Scientist Ida can now enjoy her scientific name formally and legally!

FROM THE SHORT SHARP SCIENCE blog:
“Since I spoke to the ICZN about the name Darwinius masillae, the journal has come up with an emergency fix – they’ve printed out 50 copies of the paper. They’re on sale for $10 each from the PLoS offices in San Francisco. Apparently the commissioners are now happy and the name is now valid. Phew.” Agree – phew!

Well well, lat week we’ve all hear about the discovery of fossil nicknamed Ida – a skeleton which supposed to belong to the animal being a IdaColourNewTeasermissing link in human evolution. And all this right in 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, which we are celebrating this year. Cool, isn’t?

Unfortunately, Ida occures to be quite problematic girl. Fossil. Whatever. First, there are some strong doubts wheter Ida really is a missing link.

Later the Wall Street Journal has written that the date of the announcement of the discovery was enforced by the TV producers.

And noww, as the New Scientist’s blog “Short Sharp Science” reports, there are even doubts wheter Ida can keep its scientific name. Formally Ida has been named  Darwinius masillae, in honour of Charles Darwin’s 200th birthday. Paper about its discovery has been published in the online science journal “PLoS ONE”.

“But the rules set by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) require species names to be published in print before they can be formally allocated.” – the blog reminds.

Patricia Pancreas and Lucy Lung – quite different dolls, which make You think

leave a comment »

donor dollsDonating organs after death is very important, though controversial issue. For example, despite the fact that I know, that my liver or lung could help someone I am not sure if I would wanted to become a donor, even though I for cremation .
Maybe I will change my and in some time (it would be good, wouldn’t it?). Taking into account my statement above it may (or rather must) sound hypocritical, but I think that the organ donation is an issue worth talking about and educating about. So the people would know what choice they have.

There, I finished. The reason to write that above are really different toys created by David Foox, an artist based in Denver, Colorado. Though most probably he has created his dolls just for fun, I think that accidentally such funny story can make people think about what they can do with their livers, lungs etc. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am honoured to present to you the amazing Donor Dolls.

We have here a doll of Black Market Kidney, Red Blood Cell, Cornea and Smoker’s Lung (yuck!!!!). And 2o other. Cute, though horrible.
